From Sheldon Laube's perspective, the biggest problem companies face is that the pace of technological change is faster today than in any time before in our history. "How do we work in a world where technology continuously changes at a rate that we've never seen before?" asks Laube. "You used to be able to depend on software being around 3 to 5 years but now it becomes obsolete in 12 to 18 months."

As co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of USWeb/CKS, Laube works with USWeb/CKS consultants and clients to answer these questions. Laube's responsibilities include technology strategy and overall direction of the firm's development operations. He assists a wide range of USWeb/CKS clients in understanding the impact of new technologies on business strategy. Laube is both a visionary technologist as well as a pragmatic development executive.

"People have to continuously learn, but it's important to balance what's new with what's revolutionary," says Laube. "Change is overwhelming and uncomfortable. Our clients don't want to think of the world in radical terms. They like to think of the world in incremental terms. They don't like to hear, 'We're going to throw away everything you've ever known.' They want to hear, 'We're going to help you move forward. We're going to preserve the best of the past and combine it with the value of the future.'"

Formerly CTO for Novell, Laube led the development of Novell's technology strategy across its product divisions. He was also responsible for leading Novell's Advanced Technology Group, a group of senior scientists and architects working on new technologies. He was responsible for forming a new corporate strategy that focused the company on its core opportunities and challenges.

Prior to joining Novell, Laube was director of information and technology with Price Waterhouse, a worldwide $4 billion professional services firm. In this role, he was responsible for two groups: The Price Waterhouse World Technology Centre in Menlo Park, California, that develops advanced technologies for use by Price Waterhouse and its clients, and the Price Waterhouse Information Technology Center Tampa, Florida, that provides the organization's global network and information infrastructure. While at Price Waterhouse he was responsible for the world's first major installation of Lotus Notes. And, in 1994, CRN named him one of the world's top 25 computer executives.

Prior to joining Price Waterhouse in 1986, Laube was with Consumer Financial Institute (CFI) as vice president of research and development.
